Proposal Information

Description:

An intern in the Region 8 GIS/Asset Management Unit will have the opportunity to see how engineering requirements, business processes and community needs are translated into working IT support systems. Modern Engineering and Asset Management practices require both spatial location and physical attribute data. The goal of the work will be to provide reliable desktop access to critical departmental data by developing / populating inventory systems utilizing ESRI GIS. The Intern will learn to create and use layers and geo-databases, and will gain experience working with actual data sets and actively participating in field data collection efforts. Assignments will include any or all of the following tasks.
* GIS layer development - preparation and/or manipulation of layers for Department use, such as Emergency Response
* State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) - create geo-database of the Department's highway storm water treatment sites from existing MS Access database
* Record Plans index - update existing GIS layer of the Department's "as-built" plans with additional projects and link to electronic copy of plans on the Department's server
* Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - update existing geo-database inventory of sidewalk & ramps on state highways
* Retaining Walls - extract data from existing paper and/or electronic files and populate geo-database
* Field Data Collection - Develop ArcPad forms for mobile field data collection. Use GPS unit to locate ADA Sidewalk & Ramps, Retaining Walls, or guiderail on the state highway system.
